Slack is the heartbeat of emgprd.org. It is not optional, it is not a nice-to-have ā it is where our team lives and works. This article outlines exactly what is expected of you from the moment you join.
ā” The 30-Minute Rule #
When you join our Slack workspace, the clock starts immediately.
You have 30 minutes to:
- Join the #show-your-engagement channel
- Actively introduce yourself to the team
That is it. No complicated requirements ā just show up and engage.
ā ļø If you do not engage within 30 minutes of joining, your account will be deactivated immediately ā without warning and without exception.
You have received this information in your Welcome Email, in our Knowledge Base, and in our Idealist listing. There is no excuse for not knowing.
š Snooze & Notification Settings #
Snoozeing your notifications does not pause the 30-minute rule.
ā ļø If you join Slack with notifications snoozed, your account will be deactivated ā at the earliest after 30 minutes, at the latest to the second once that window has passed.
You have been told what to do before you ever joined. Notification settings are your responsibility, not ours.
š¤ General Inactivity #
The 30-minute rule applies at the moment of joining. But the expectation of active engagement does not stop there.
Volunteers who become inactive after joining ā meaning no visible communication, no task activity, no presence ā will have their accounts deactivated. Slack membership is not a passive status. If you are here, you are expected to be active.
Inactive accounts identified through regular reviews will be removed without prior notice.
ā Automatic Deactivation #
Account deactivation happens automatically and immediately in the following cases:
- No engagement in #show-your-engagement within 30 minutes of joining
- Notifications snoozed upon joining ā deactivated after the 30-minute window
- No response to the automated welcome message upon joining
- Extended inactivity identified through regular Slack activity reviews
There is no grace period. There is no reminder. The rules are communicated clearly before you join ā acting on them is your responsibility.
š Can I Rejoin After Deactivation? #
If your account was deactivated due to inactivity or failure to engage, you are welcome to reapply through our standard recruitment process. A previous deactivation does not permanently disqualify you ā but it does mean starting fresh.
ā Questions? #
If you have questions before joining or need clarification, reach out on Slack ā but be ready to engage the moment you do: š Join Slack
